We want you to experiment with our sample illustrations. Since you cannot save your changes with the Trial Version, nothing you do will damage the original illustration.
TO OPEN THE SPECIAL TRIAL VERSION SAMPLE ILLUSTRATION: double-click the program icon. Then select the Open command in the File menu. Double click on the Sample Illustrations folder and then double click on the file called “FestaTV.FH4.”
WHAT YOU WILL SEE is an illustration page, reduced in scale to fit into the Aldus FreeHand 4.0 illustration window. The page shows a finished illustration, called “FestaTV.FH4.” Surrounding the page is the pasteboard. Illustration objects can be positioned on the pasteboard but will print only when located on an illustration page. Smaller windows may also appear in front of the illustration; these are palettes.
Palettes are interactive panels that replace dialog boxes and menu commands.
TO OPEN A PALETTE:
• Open the Window menu and choose one of the commands that is not checked.
TO CHANGE PALETTE VIEWS:
• Open the “Inspector” palette.
• Click the zoom box on the far-right end of the palette title bar. Then click it again.
• Click, in turn, each of the five icons across the top part of the “Inspector” palette.
• Click on the title bar and drag the palette to another location on the screen.
TO CREATE A COLOR:
• Open the “Color mixer” palette.
• Type a number between 1 and 100 in each of the four edit boxes (C, M, Y, K).
• Drag the sliders beside these edit boxes.
TO SAVE A COLOR:
• Open the “Color list” palette.
• Place the pointer on the color you mixed in the “Color mixer” palette. Hold the mouse button down, and drag to the “Color list” palette; then drop the color in the Color drop box, which is the small box with a downward arrow near the upper-right corner of the “Color list” palette. The saved color now appears at the bottom of the list of colors.
TO REDEFINE A COLOR:
• Create a new color on the “Color mixer” palette.
• Drag the new color to the “Color list” palette, and drop it on top of the swatch of the color named “Cloth.” Notice the changes in the illustration.
• Choose “Undo” from the Edit menu to change back to the original color.
There are a number of drawing tools for freeform drawing and for automatic drawing of basic shapes. The tools are located on the Toolbox, another one of the palettes.
The drawing tools include:
• Rectangle tool (click and drag)
• Polygon tool (click and drag; double-click the tool icon to set options)
• Ellipse tool (click and drag)
• Line tool (click and drag)
• Freehand tool (click and drag)
• Pen tool (click, move to a new position, and click or click-drag; repeat. Double-click the tool icon to set options.)
• Bezigon tool (looks like a rounded triangle: click, move to a new position, and click; repeat.)
• Use the Pointer tool (the arrow-shaped icon on the Toolbox) to select a closed object by clicking on it. Or, draw a new closed object.
NOTE: Selection handles or path points appear when an object is selected. (Press the Tab key if you want to deselect, and the handles or points will disappear--but don’t do that now).
• Open the Fill Inspector (the icon second from the left on the “Inspector” palette).
• Choose various options from the drop-down list just below the icons on the Fill Inspector.
• Drag and drop colors from other palettes to color wells on the Fill Inspector.
NOTE: If you choose a “Textured,” “Custom,” or “PostScript” fill, your monitor will display a pattern of letters. Print to see the fill effect.
• Duplicate an object and then drag it a short distance. Do not deselect the object.
• Choose “Duplicate” again.
• Choose “Duplicate” repeatedly.
TO POWER-DUPLICATE WITH OTHER CHANGES:
• Choose “Transform...” from the Arrange menu to open the “Transform” palette.
• Select an object, and choose “Clone” from the Edit menu. A duplicate will appear exactly above the original, so you probably will not see any difference on screen.
• Then move, rotate, resize, skew, or reflect the object by choosing an icon and entering options on the “Transform” palette. Click on "Apply" to complete the transformation. (You can do more than one transformation as long as you are careful not to deselect the object during the process. EXAMPLE: Draw a rectangle with the Rectangle tool; clone it; resize it at 80%; move it outside the area of the original rectangle; and rotate it 30°.)
• Double-click the Freehand tool icon (it looks like a scribble, to the left of the Pen tool) to open a dialog box. Try drawing with each of the three variations of the Freehand tool. NOTE: With the Variable stroke tool, use the left and right arrow keys or a pressure-sensitive input device to change the drawing width.
• Select three or four objects at once. Then open the “Align” palette from the Arrange menu, and select options for horizontal and vertical alignment.
• Select two overlapping, closed shapes. Choose commands from the “Path operations” submenu on the Arrange menu and notice the results.
• To get rid of a mistake without destroying all your changes, choose “Undo” from the Edit menu. To get rid of several mistakes, choose “Undo” several times in succession.
• If you type something in a palette and no change occurs, or the typing changes back to the original entry, retype your entry and press the Return key.
• If you type more text than fits in the text block you created, you have a couple of options. (1) Drag one of the corners of the text block with the Pointer tool to resize it. (2) Use the Text tool to create a second text block. Then use the Pointer tool to drag from the small square below the lower-right corner of the original text block (the square will contain a large black dot) to the new text block. The excess text will flow into the new text block.
